Stay at home dad teams with mom to create blackandchristian.com
When Bryan Trussell's mom said she wanted to create a website for African American Christians, she didn't know the difference between Outlook Express and Front Page. But her son had begun picking up books from the library on HTML programming and website design.
After taking a couple courses at a community college, Bryan created a family home page so that his mom and wife's family could keep up with the anticipated birth of the couple's second child. When the baby was born in November, 1999 the couple made a choice. Bryan would be a stay at home dad and concentrate on designing web sites.
The groundwork for establishing BlackandChristian.com was laid. On February 26, 2000 Bryan and his mother, Jacqueline Trussell launched BlackandChristian.com, an informational and inspirational web source for African and African American Christians and others interested in the African American religious experience. The site is a comprehensive source that seeks to bridge the gap between the pulpit, the pew and the academy.
A 1998 graduate of Harvard Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Jacqueline wanted to combine her interest in journalism and African American religious history to create a comprehensive resource for ministry to clergy and congregations as well as theologians and students preparing for ministry. BlackandChristian.com also provides historical information on the Black Church and a directory of congregations on the web. The idea is to promote the good news of the African American religious community.
"We have creative and talented people in our community who love the Lord and are doing great work. I want to share this information with the world to let them know that as the motto of my church proclaims, 'we are unashamedly Black and unapolegetically Christian.' Jacqueline is a member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago where the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr., pastors the 8000 member congregation.
As with any new start-up, Bryan and Jacqueline are seeking sponsors and support for the site. "We are continuing to add new features and offer free email, a newsletter, community bulletin board and we feature books, music and a calendar of events, conferences and conventions," said Jacqueline.
"BlackandChristian.com is a global ministry. We have a section called 'On the Continent' featuring links to African Christian ministries and resources. We plan to cover the diaspora--wherever there are Black Christians, be it Africa, the Caribbean, or Australia, we plan to be their one stop resource."
Meanwhile, Bryan continues to help his mom out keeping BlackandChristian.com fresh and up to date in between diaper changes and bottle feedings. BlackandChristian.com shows Bryan's work as a good black man. And Jacqueline now knows the difference between Outlook Express and Front Page.
