Brothers 4 Life: Maximize your assets, minimize your liabilities

Dwight ThomasBrothers 4 Life was founded by Dwight Thomas, Sr. in April 1995. Mr. Thomas, an African American father was disturbed by the numbers of African American males dying in mainstream society. He founded his organization as a means of addressing some of the cultural, educational, medical and spiritual issues facing the African American male community.

Strategy:

Brothers4Life already has an extensive list of service providers working in Baltimore City and surrounding areas. We will continue to do assessments regarding new providers along with the specialists on staff with Brothers4Life.

We will address the effects of lack of education in the prison systems and how they are handling subjects such as HIV/AIDS, education, job readiness and substance abuse treatment. There are support groups already set in place at this time to receive new clients through the service providers already affiliated with Brothers4 Life.

Goals:

The over all goal of Brothers 4 Life is to provide programs that will help create a different mind set for African American males in an attempt to make a positive impact on how they conduct themselves. The programs available are not only designed to rebuild ideals and self-esteem. They are also a combination of GED preparation, support groups, substance abuse treatment providers, one-on-one counseling, HIV-AIDS testing and mental health counseling.

Objectives:

•  To bring service providers together in a collaborative effort to serve the African American male population.

•  To create an assessment protocol to determine the level of services being provided.

•  To establish after-care groups for African American males upon their release from detox or chemical additions centers.

•  To create an African American male support group that will address issues relevant to HIV/AIDS prevention, sex education, substance abuse and other issues which negatively effect the health and well being of African American males.

•  To promote job readiness by providing educational programs and training.

•  To utilize community service providers for family support counseling of special needs population (i.e., victims of sexual abuse, the mentally ill, and illiteracy).
