We are pleased to present poetry written by women who have been inspired by the love, caring and strength of the good Black men in their lives. Enjoy.

Black Men, We Salute You
(Prose submitted anonymously)

Good Black men are indeed all around us. We pass them on the streets, in the malls and the halls at work. Most we can't see because we don't know what a good man really looks like.

He usually isn't flashy enough or rich enough to turn our heads. He might not wear a suit or push a Lex. He might not have a "body like Arnold with a Denzel face." But, as you mature, you'll realize it's better to find someone who's got your back than someone who can turn your head.

A good man doesn't agree wholeheartedly with everything you say. He doesn't just tell you what you want to hear and do the opposite. He doesn't declare how sensitive, sweet, caring, sincere, yada yada he is (he won't have to because it shows).

He has his own opinions and you may clash, but he doesn't have to degrade you to prove he's right. He even admits at times to being wrong, especially if you are willing to do the same.

A good man is not going to meet every item on your check list. He is human with frailties and faults mixed in with all of his wonderful, strong attributes.

He needs your love and respect. He needs to feel that you don't live to "catch" him doing something wrong so you can declare, "Aha! I knew you were a dog!!"

A good man doesn't necessarily give you a huge birthday or Valentine's gift. He shows his love in the ways that are comfortable to him. Don't judge him by TV standards. No one is living that fairy tale life for real. You'll miss out on your own fairy tale by buying into the myth that our men are no good. It's just not true.

Black Men, we salute you, and thank you for who you are and all you've done.

I Simply Love My Black Man

Simply put I love my Black Man and all that he is.
From his flamboyant style, the grace of his moves to his unlimited possibilities.

He knows just what I need to
get me through the night,
and what to tell me, that let's me know
- everything will be all right.
He is my protector, my lover, my warrior king
I don't feel insecure when he is on the scene.

He is an intellectual and a poet,
an innovator of change
and yes, oh yes, this Black man knows it.
He stirs my mind with knowledge,
with truth and with love
and it is he that I want to be a part of.
He is all that he is and the world takes notice,
they scream and shout
for they wish they too carried the same personal clout.

No other man can love me the way that he can,
no other man can make me feel
the way he makes me feel.
Unbounded by earth,
floating through space and my only wish
is the opportunity to touch his beautiful face.

This man I love for all that he is and all that he will come to be...
Black, Beautiful and made just for me.

MY GOOD BLACK MAN

Like spring emerging from winter
There he is - my good Black man
There like a breath of fresh air
Bringing color and warmth
There he is, my good Black man.

There's never been another
To provide and care
To laugh, to cry, to listen and share

From the hill tops
Aloud and resounding
Praising him from the depths of my being
There's never been another
Like my good Black man.

Strong and caring
Generous and kind
My lover my mate
A friend of mine

God fearing and upstanding
His presence commanding
Forthright and genuine
My good Black man

Like the rhthyms of jazz
Like indigo blue
He's smooth, he's breath taking
Worthy of the love I give to you

He's My good Black Man.

(I think I'll keep him).

A Poem For Black Men
by Keya Medley

(a little something to let the brothers know that there's still mad love for them.)

He's in my dreams not always specific
The one and only one I want, I feel, I long for.
His hands,
Strong hands, black hands,
uplifting hands to touch me,
hold me, caress me, love me.
Vivid, like the moment never ending
always there.
For me, for me only,
loving, caring, wanting.
He brings revolution to his people,
love to his woman,
security to his children
and peace to himself.
He is a worker, a fighter, a teacher, a lover,
with gifts to offer this world this nation.
Gifts more precious than gold or jewels.
Gifts made to last until this Earth
wobbles over on it's last leg.
They are precious offerings
of a real, true, BLACK MAN.
A man who knows what he stands for,
knows what he wants,
and knows how to get everything he desires.
He is rare and precious.
One in a million,
hard to come by.
This strong, loving, Black man.
I have found him,
I have watched him, constantly.
In my dreams.

I wrote this a few years ago, and I can say I have found some to fit this description

for my brothas
by Tracy M. Floyd

with admirable hands
i massage your strong back
the same back that protects my race
with an unyielding pride
the same back that endures hardship
with a unique grace
the same back that shelters me
with an unflinching love . . .
i kiss every inch of your spine
whispering "thank you" between every smack
you wonder why i do this -
but i feel what you go through
i see the pain etched on your face
the worry wrinkling your brow
the long exhales the disbelief in your eyes...
and i know that you want
what's best for me
but i already have the best
because i have you black man

Chocolate Stir
By Sandra R. Hicks

The solid black man is my chocolate stir
He is caffeine free with the natural moves of a sleek, majestic panther.

He worships and serves the Almighty and respects the throne on which God sits.
He is steady on his feet with the readiness for all of his maleness.

His aroma is potent.
It draws the scent of the real.

He treasures me and proves that I am his genuine jewel.
He backs his words and that cold thrills me.

He works hard with his heart focused on a bright productive future.
He learns from yesterday, lives for today, and prepares for tomorrow.

He plays fair and advances with the team.
He loves his people and strives to embrace unity and goodwill for all of humankind.

He stays packed for the journeys and goes light but tight for the missions.
He arrives alert, equipped, and done for the deals.

He is loving, deep, courageous, responsible, and fun. He is my chocolate stir and I love the flavor of the man that he is.
