A Bounty For A Black Life? The snapshot of Southern sheriffs and police officials laughing and smirking in court during their trial for their involvement in the shooting death of an African-American is still horrifyingly familiar to many Americans. The officers were confident that no all-white Southern jury would take any action against them. Almost always they were right... more l top

Activists Must See the Bigger Picture in NAACP-TV Agreement Poor Kweisi Mfume. In July the NAACP president at the group's annual conference threatened the network TV executives with boycotts and protests for their blatant ethnic cleansing of minorities from TV shows and their pathetic hiring record of minorities. The reaction was swift and brutal. First the TV executives accused Mfume of meddling in their business. Next black activists hammered him for wasting time on an industry they see as a hopeless wasteland of hype and hustle totally irrelevant to African-Americans..." more l top

Black Eye For Black Leaders In Mississippi Hanging It's hard to see how many other official probes it will take before Jesse Jackson and black leaders accept the bitter truth that black Mississippi teen Raynard Johnson was not lynched but committed suicide. The latest to come to that conclusion is Michael Baden. The world-renowned forensic expert visited Johnson's home and thoroughly reviewed two autopsy reports one of which was privately commissioned by Johnson's family... more l top

Blame All Around For The LAPD Scandal The stunning announcement by Los Angeles Police Chief Bernard Parks that he has called on the FBI to investigate the dirty cops in his department was greeted with much applause. Of course with fresh allegations piling up almost daily that LAPD officers beat and shot unarmed suspects, doctored evidence, gave perjured testimony, falsified reports, and covered up shootings of unarmed suspects, the embattled chief had to do something dramatic... more l top

Confederate Flag Fight Dodges Bigger Battles When ex-rebel state South Carolina defiantly waved the Confederate flag over its statehouse the issue became a red flag for NAACP leaders. They have galvanized a flock of politicians, college and professional athletes, black frats and sororities, hip-hop, rock and movie stars to march, rally and boycott the state until it lowers the flag... more l top

Feds Criminalize A Generation The prison incarceration juggernaut slowed down slightly in state prisons in 1999. But the federal government more than picked up the slack. According to a Bureau of Justice report the number of those jailed in federal prisons grew by 11,000 in 1999. The majority of them were for drug offenses. And to almost no one's surprise most of these drug offenders were young African-Americans... more l top

Gun Buybacks: Good Intentions, Ineffective Approach Clinton's heart was in the right place when he authorized the Department of Housing and Urban Development to shell out $14 million to cities to buy back guns in private hands. Clinton made the cash offer for two reasons. The first is public fear and outrage over the recent deadly wave of shootings at high schools and on city streets that have taken a disastrous toll in lives and human suffering... more l top

How Denzel Was Robbed The man probably least surprised when pre-Oscar night favorite Denzel Washington did not grab the Oscar for his winning performance as boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter in the film Hurricane was Denzel Washington. I'm sure he reads the three Hollywood trade papers, the Daily Variety, Weekly Variety, and the Hollywood Reporter.... more l top

No justice for police whistle blower “They are trying to starve me out.” Black Riverside police officer Rene Rodriguez spoke his tearful words of personal pain to a national audence on a recent edition of CBS-TV’s 60 Minutes. Rodriguez says that the “they” are Riverside police and city officials. He says that they are angered at him for blowing the whistle on discrimination and abusive practices within the Riverside police department... more l top

Taxi Cab Racism I know the pain, rage and embarrassment that shook actor Danny Glover when five cab drivers recently refused to pick him up on a New York city street. A couple of years ago my wife, I and another African-American couple stood fuming on a mid-Manhattan street on a cold, windy evening in December as we watched empty cab after empty cab sail leisurely by ignoring our increasingly frantic signals for them pick us up. One cab driver glanced at us, waved us off, and then stopped a few feet in front of us to pick up a white couple... more l top
