This month we invite you to enjoy our "Year in Review" edition. We've gone over all the submissions, profiles, articles and editorials we received for 2002 and have created this encore collection for you. We begin with a remembrance of the people of color who perished in the World Trade Center attacks.

On September 11, 2001 America was forever changed by terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, DC. On that day, the lives of at least 3,031 were lost. The AGBM family offers it condolences to all the families of all the victims. We ask also that you say a prayer of remembrance for the brothers who perished in this tragic event. Celebrate the Life of Captain LeRoy Homer
Capt. LeRoy Homer perished with the passengers and crew of United Airlines Flight 93 (the 4th hijacked plane) when it crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. LeRoy developed his love of airplanes at a very young age. As a little boy he would go with his dad to watch airplanes taking off and landing. By the time he was sixteen he was licensed to fly small planes.  more

Celebrate the Lives of the Brothers Who Fell In The WTC
In the days following the attacks on America, friends and family sent photos (to CNN) of people they believed to be missing as a result of the attacks . AGBM in partnership with www.celebrating-life.com presents a partial list of names and images of some of the men of color feared lost in this tragedy.  more

Celebrate the Lives of Our Fallen Heros
Please view the photos and pray a special prayer for the 12 African-American (New York) fire fighters lost in the World Trade Center 911 Attack. A trust fund has been established by the Vulcan Society to aid the children of its missing members and to build a memorial in front of the chapter's office in New York.  more

Remembering the Victims of the Pentagon Attack
The Department of Defense reports a total of 125 service members, employees and contract workers died in the September 11 attack on the Pentagon building. An additional 64 people died aboard the hijacked American Airlines Flight 77, which crashed into the west side of the building.

Hero's Dream Carried on by Scholarships
The LeRoy W. Homer, Jr. Foundation will honor the memory of the September 11th hero through yearly aviation scholarships. LeRoy Homer was the first officer on United Flight 93, which tragically crashed in Shanksville, PA on September 11, 2001.   more


The first annual "Legacy of Excellence Awards Celebration" and networking event was presented to a near capacity crowd at the Afroindo Art Gallery in Randallstown, Maryland. Five outstanding Black men were honored for their example to Black male youth and the ongoing contributions they make to the community at large.

James Stewart, Jr. is the youngest 125cc AMA National Champion in Motor Cross (MX) history. During the 2002 MX season he also became the first African-American AMA Champion, earned the most wins (10 of 12) in 125cc AMA MX history, and had the best rookie season in MX history. Who says "there are no good Black men?" Each month, we receive nominations from family members and friends who want to recognize and thank good Black men for their positive contributions. We want to thank them too with this encore salute and our open invitation for your remembrances and tributes.

In her submission, Lorraine Whitney shares: This is a man of few means with a heart as precious as diamonds and warm as the sun. I have seen this man sacrifice his entire personal life to be a hard working man and single father.  more

Black Male of the Month: Thomas E. Thompson
In her submission, Joyce Thompson shares: After spending 33 years in prison and on the streets involved in drugs and alcohol, Tom has turned his life around.  more

Black Male of the Month: Derrell Owens Jr.
In his submission, Nick Taylor praises his friend: "His personal conviction to break stereotypes, especially those pertaining to African American men, is evident in his personal life and in his writing."  more

Black Male of the Month: Demetri Kornegay
In her submission, Angela Kornegay praises her husband: "My husband spent 15 straight Saturdays tranforming a group of pouting wannabe thugs into a platoon of sharp, brilliant, well-spoken, well-dressed young men. Everyone in our church was so proud. He's been doing it since 1992. "  more
