Black Male of the Month Nominations
Nominee: Mike Barney

Category: veteran
Comments: This man knows who he is and is proud to be an strong African man. In
corporate matters he displays integrity and honesty in his dealings with
colleagues, he will not compromise his basic principles of self respect and
respect to his sisters and brothers. He is supportive of others dreams and
instead of keeping opportunities to himself he always shares the knowledge. He
has a congenial tempermant and is respectful to women.
As a friend, if you need a helping hand this man never beats around the bush, if he can do it, (which is most times), he will. If he can't he will let you know and offer alternatives. I have personally seen this man stand up for the rights of women in a corporate
setting. He is a family man dedicated to his wife and son and encourages his son
to beat the odds by being his personal best regardless of the outcome.
In summary Mike Barney can open a school for teaching men of all races how to be
a star role model in society.
Nominee: Patrick H. Freeman

Patrick has been on the battle field for equal rights and justice for over 8 years. He started out by appearing weekly on student radio Sunyastonbrook. He promotes the history of our people that has been overlooked in the history books. He has coached little league and worked fearlessly to inform our community via his own radio talk show in Buffalo, NY.
He has a (radio) show called, The Message. Each week he features learned and conscious Black writers who inform and inspire our people. He has the only sports to capture the interest of youth so that they can be inspired to use their talents as a tool to stay away from the streets.
He examines and uncovers the negative influences that put major sports figures in the news. Where other news media puts us down, he showcases the owners and how they use the athletes to make millions. He is well read, does extensive research and is well armed with knowledge - not just emotions!
He went to Egypt with his undergraduate class and has not been the same after seeing the ancient civilization that was put together by our ancestors. His favorites are Dr. John Henrik Clark and Malcolm X He and a group of his peers celebrate their birthdays every year in Buffalo, NY.
He may one day come to national prominence due to his loyalty, devotion and knowledge of all mankind with special interests in the African American and The Motherland from which he sprang. His radio audience knows him as The Mighty Oba. He is a real brother with a focus and a future that is inclusive.
Nominee: Lamont Gill

Comments: This is an awesome youngman. Lamont is my son-in-law as of Aug 19
2000. However, I met him five years ago, when he first started dating my only
child, Ayanna. During this time, I have watched Lamont interact with his (now )
nine years old son. He has faced a lot of adversary from his son's mother, but
nothing has stopped him from getting Jerry every other weekend, Christmas,
Easter and the entire summer.
I watch Lamont bond with his son, by talking with him and doing things like assembling a bike, dying eggs and tutoring his son on multiplications problems. Lamont loves his son and wants Jerry to grow up to be a positive Black Man. I feel it is a honor to have Lamont has my son-in-law and future father of my grandchildren. I believe this young man should be selected
as Black Male of the Month because of his strong qualities, leadership and caring.
Nominee: Corey Jefferson

I have nominated my son, Corey Jefferson, for the month of April. He
is a father, husband, son, brother, and grandson. He has met all those roles in a
caring, supportive manner.
We all (the females) in the family know we can count on him for love and a supportive shoulder to lean on. I have watched him move through life with great courage and determination. He was diagnosed with dyslexia in his 2nd year of college and had to work 10 times harder that most students to complete his bachlelors degree at Morehouse College. He carried a very heavy school workload for a person who with dyslexia.
Corey also worked as a waiter in the evenings to help support himself. Many individuals would have given up, but he maintained his faith in God and prayed to strength as he always
does. Regardless of the storms in his life, maintains his faith in God.
Therefore, he is my hero and one of those "good black men" we all should
celebrate everyday.
Nominee: Leonard Johnson, III

Comments: I'm a single devoted parent. As a male it's hard to take on the
responsibility of being a Father. I struggle everyday trying to educate my two
sons and show them the love and care they need. I feel that I've pushed away
from the traditional way of how a man should be raised. "To show no fear and
never admit that you can't do it".
Those words are the forecoming of our
failure should we continue to believe in them. Letting go of your pride is the
first step to becoming a good black male. Second, seek Advice from family,
friends, and or counselor. Last but not least, love yourself. Thank You

The man I nominated is my Father. My biological Dad relinguished his
responsibility when I was really young, leaving my mother to be a "single
mother". My Father raised me, another man's child as if I were his own flesh
and blood, making no exceptions when it was time to discipline and not playing
favorites when it was time to congratulate.
My Father was the man to show up to all my graduations, he was the man who taught me to tell time and to walk me down the aisle when I got married. He is my Father, he is a Man in every since of the word and I love him for loving me and my mother so deeply. My parents
have now been married for 23 years. God is so good!!
