Males Becoming Men

Paul GrantPaul Grant is the proud son of Annie L. Grant and the late Rev. Sammy Grant, Sr. Paul was born the sixth of six children, in Baltimore, Maryland. Despite being raised in a family without a father, his mother instilled in him the value of an education and the knowledge that he could accomplish anything.

Mr. Grant has a diploma in carpentry from Carver Vocational Technical High School. He continued his education at Morgan State University, studying in Physical Education. Paul also played basketball for Morgan State where he averaged 15 points per game. The following year he was drafted by Crystal Palace - a professional basketball team in London England.

Paul played one successful season in England, not knowing that God was about to rearrange Paul's plans. Paul came back to Baltimore and graduated from Morgan State in 1999 with a B.S. degree. Paul Grant is currently teaching Physical Education at Harlem Park Middle=20 School. He also is the founder of "Males Becoming Men", which is a mentoring program that teaches young men to respond positively to every situation that comes their way.

"Males Becoming Men", is a vision of Bishop Darneal F. Johnson, III. Paul Grant is pursuing his Masters degree at Coppin State College in "Special Education", and "Adaptive Physical Education". He realizes that he did not become a man until he connected with his mentor and spiritual father Bishop Darneal F. Johnson, III. Paul Grant's theme is: "Everything Great Cost, So Pay The Price NOW"!

Cross Cultural Exchange Program

Males Becoming Men is a comprehensive mentoring program with many aspects to develop the mind, body, and spirit of every young man through a holistic approach to education, learning and self-awareness. Without an understanding of where you have come from you cannot make it to where you are going because you have lost the reality of yourself.

One must take a journey back to his origin to rediscover his identity and fulfill his destiny. With this notion in mind, the Males Becoming Men exchange program was created to give these young men an opportunity to travel to the continent of Africa. Nothing can take the place of a travel abroad experience because of the lasting impact of being in a completely different environment and experiencing life through the eyes of another person. Books, tapes and documentaries only provide a limited view of a different culture. The best way to understand another culture and people is to experience life as the native people.

The Males Becoming Men exchange program is designed to provide the mentees with a life changing opportunity to travel abroad. Students who are selected to participate in the exchange program will get to travel to Senegal and the Gambia, West Africa. As part of the program, they will spend one month on the continent of Africa (2 weeks in each place). During this time they will stay with host families, attend school with students from their same age group, and participate in number of activities to give them a taste of life in West Africa.

The goal of the Males Becoming Men exchange program is to expose these young men to the realities of life outside of Baltimore and the United States. This experience will broaden their horizons and open their eyes to the world around them. The purpose of this program is not only to provide an opportunity to travel but an opportunity to change. This program will effectively bridge the gap between young people on both sides of the Atlantic. Some of the highlights of the program include the following:

  • Travel Abroad
  • Stay with Host Family
  • Relationship Building
  • Team Work
  • Promote Entrepreneurship
  • Promote Interaction Through Trade, Investment and Employment Opportunities
  • Bridge The Gap Between African and African-American Youth.
