Black Male of the Month: Tavaris Jones
Good Men are not hard to find we are surround by them daily, some of us just do not know it. I am here to nominate and honor one of my best male friends: Tavaris Jones. Tavaris puts 110 per cent into everything he does. Besides working a full time job in the information technology field, he spends time mentoring young boys as a Boy Scout.
When he is not mentoring you can find Tavaris out on the track racing his R.C.
cars or out doing various things for himself and those he holds close to his
heart. I stumbled across the name "Zuri" one day, which means "beautiful" in Swahili.
That name embodies who Tavaris is as a man, son, brother, friend, more importantly as a
child of God. Zuri (as I like to call him) tries his best to encourage those around him whether it's by his gentle words or by his actions.
One evening a few months ago my car was in the shop & I had left my bible in it. I wanted to read a passage in the bible before I turned in for the night. Tavaris had things to finish up, but told me he could call me up and read it to me. It was around one o'clock in the morning. HOwever, he called me up (long distance) and read the passage to me over the telephone.
When I asked him why he did that for me, he simply replied, "Because I wanted to." That is one of the examples of the things he does for his friends. Tavaris faith in God humbles him. He is not trying to out do the next man.
In my opinion his success is not measured by material things but by the lives he's touched -- directly and indirectly. He takes the time out to give back not because he has to or for the recognition. He does it to make a difference. He has for more people than he realizes.
On our separate journeys in life our paths crossed, I am blessed to know him, love him and to be his friend. In the words of Salt & Pepa "Whatta Man, Whatta Mighty Good Man."
