Preston Mitchum, Jr:
Shedding Light on the Broken Spirits

"Broken Spirit," is a new show aimed at making the Baltimore area more aware of the issues surrounding domestic violence. Produced by WMAR-TV Videographer Preston Mitchum Jr., this half hour program focuses on local women, men and children who have survived physical and emotional abuse. The show works to dispel some of the myths about domestic violence and highlight where area victims can go for help.

Domestic violence is a way of life for more than one million Americans. Our society often sets this unspoken crisis aside, but Mr. Mitchum strongly feels education and awareness could change the fate of many area victims. Through a team of talented writers, photographers and his video production company (GroundBreaking Enterprises), Mr. Mitchum plans to create a series of half hour shows dedicated to this important issue.

He has enlisted two former WMAR television news personalities, Stan Stovall and Lisa Torockio, to contribute to the project. Plans call for "Broken Spirit" and future specials to air on area cable stations and on college campuses across the state. According to Mr. Mitchum, "As individuals we need to play our part in making a difference in our communities."

Each new monthly program will provide an in-depth look at a specific part of domestic violence. Community support is needed to help further the efforts of this project because so far, it has been an entirely volunteer effort. Those who provide support in the form of money can become recognized sponsors. A $2000 sponsor would be named at the top of the show, a $1000 sponsor would be recognized at the first break, a $500 sponsor would be recognized at the second break and a $500 sponsor would be recognized at the final break. All sponsors will be mentioned at the very end of the program. We also welcome any additional information or support referrals concerning this topic.

Those who wish to contribute or have any questions can contact Preston Mitchum, Jr. by telephone at 410-574-3147 or visit his web site www.gbevideophoto.com.

Starting August 15, 2002 the pilot broadcast of Broken Spirit will air on these Maryland channels: Baltimore City Cable Access, Channel 26 Salisbury, Towson University, BCTV Bowie State University, Charles County and CTV Prince George's County.
