Community Outreach: Gregory Robinson: Running For Literacy

My name is Gregory Robinson and I am the sole participant of the run. I was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. I ran my first marathon in October of 1996, and I have been running ever since.

Currently enrolled at Eastern Kentucky University, I am working toward the completion of my Bachelor's Degree in English. I am the proud father of one child, Cortney A. Robinson. She is 5 years old, my Pride and Joy, and more importantly, she is the inspiration behind the Run for Literacy.

Prior to re-enrolling full time in school, I worked for the City of Detroit's Council President, Gil Hill. In that capacity, I represented the Councilman when he was not available. Additionally, I was responsible for briefing the Councilman on all the issues to come before the Council table. The experience in researching all the particulars surrounding any given topic required me to be actively involved in the community.

In my youth, I encountered the same impediments many of our children face today. I thought that I was the only one facing obstacles, so I did not fully understand the magnitude of the problem. As an adult, my community involvement afforded me the opportunity to observe firsthand the great need for literacy and education in the lives of our youth.

Realizing that literacy and education are the vehicles to reaching success, I decided to go back and finish my degree. The support and encouragement from Council President, Gil Hill, who stressed the importance of education strengthened my convictions. I consider the opportunity to get an education a blessing, and now especially as a parent, I want to give back what was given to me.
