The Leadership Transformation Freedom School Project
It is with great pleasure that we introduce you to Leadership
Transformation. Principally run by college-aged students, Leadership
Transformation supports those populations most in need by focusing on
African, African-American, and Hispanic children, youth, and families.
Programs sponsored by Leadership Transformation condemn apathy and support
the pursuit of excellence though leadership and activism and are primarily
targeted at "low-income" and "at-risk" youth. This year, several projects
are in need of funding to remain on track in both planning and execution.
These programs and projects include (among others):
- Leadership Transformation Freedom School Project: works with
elementary through junior high school youth; consists of a Saturday
curriculum that focuses on African and African-American history, leadership
development, conflict resolution, civics, computer literacy, mathematics,
and general mentorship; the adult component features courses in money
management, civic participation, healthcare, and preservation of family and
family structure;
- Leadership Academy: leadership development program for high-school
youth;
- Ambassador Roundtable: network of student leaders at Historically
Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) designed to discuss the collective
problems faced by HBCUs and the communities they serve; allows students to
develop and implement projects and agendas to alleviate some of those
burdens.
Leadership Transformation currently works primarily with Historically Black
Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) towards the development and implementation
of its national programs; however, we aspire to soon have a much stronger
working relationship with Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), Tribally
Controlled Colleges (TCCs), and interested students from Predominately White
Institutions (PWIs).
We have been fortunate enough to receive the support of several local,
regional, and national organizations that have expressed their support
through the National Board of Regents--a collaborative membership of several
organizations that have agreed to develop a structured, systematic series of
goals and objectives to collective achieve as part of a broader, global,
African-centered agenda.
In addition, we have already received additional support from over thirty
dedicated National Advisory Board Members, including:
- Lewis Anthony, Metropolitan Wesley AME Zion (Senior Pastor)
- Lorraine Blackman, Indiana Univ (Prof of Social Work)
- Anthony Browder, Institute of Karmic Guidance (Founder)
- Jamal-Harrison Bryant, Empowerment Temple (Pastor)
- Linda Cropp, City Council of the District of Columbia (Chair)
- Elijah E. Cummings, United States Congress (MD, 7th Dist)
- Ossie Davis, Actor/Writer/Activist
- Michael Eric Dyson, DePaul Univ (Prof of Humanities)
- Nikki Giovanni, Virginia Tech (Prof of English)
- Lawrence Guyot, Lecturer/Activist
- Jihad Hud, PRI/Family Skills Institute
- LaTasha Jones, Spelman College (Alumnae)
- Ava Muhammad, National of Islam (National Representative)
- Jonathan Quarles, Florida A & M Univ (Student)
- Sonia Sanchez, Temple Univ (Prof of English & Women's Studies)
- Al Sharpton, National Action Network (Founder/President)
- Harold Sims, International Activist
- Iyanla Vanzant, Inner Visions (Founder)
- Glegg L. Watson, Author/Lecturer
- Cornel West, Harvard Univ (Prof of Afro-American Studies)
Though we have our share of challenges--mostly financial--we have an
abundance of love and commitment for and to our cause.
We welcome your advice and support as we attempt to galvanize and focus the
full resources of our members and member organizations. Towards this end,
we will allow more children, youth, and families to remove their situations
of poverty, receive the education and health care necessary for their
development, and express themselves freely.

"The urgency of the hour calls for leaders of wise judgment and sound
integrity--leaders not in love with money, but in love with justice; leaders
not in love with publicity but in love with humanity; leaders who can
subject their particular egos to the greatness of the cause."
